Chinese Premier Li Keqiang delivered a speech on the China-Greece Maritime Cooperation Forum in Athens and called on to build an ocean of peace, cooperation, and harmony.

The forum is the first of its kind between China, a country on the western coast of the Pacific and Greece, a country on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean.

In his speech, Premier Li noted oceans have brought both blessing and challenges to mankind as we face heavy tasks of conserving the marine ecology and safeguarding maritime security. He stressed China will work with other countries to boost economic growth, strengthen international cooperation, and promote world peace through the ocean, and to foster peace, cooperation and harmony in the ocean.

In terms of building an ocean of peace, Li Keqiang said China will step up communication and coordination with relevant countries, and improve bilateral and multilateral mechanism, to jointly safeguard navigation freedom and security of shipping lanes, and fight piracy, terrorism on the sea, and oceanic disasters in a bid to foster tranquility and peace in the ocean.

In terms of building an ocean of cooperation, Premier Li said China will work with all coastal countries to forge partnerships for marine cooperation, build shipping lanes, develop marine economy, utilize marine resources, and explore the unknown about the ocean.

In terms of building an ocean of harmony, the Premier said while working on the development of the ocean, countries need to treat the marine ecology kindly and protect the marine environment.

When talking about China-Greece relations, Premier Li appreciated the assistance offered by Greece to help Chinese nationals evacuate from violence-hit Libya in 2011, and expressed China's firm belief in Greece to tackle the difficulties brought by its debt crisis. He believed bilateral cooperation is firm and solid. He stressed China-Greece cooperation in the Piraeus port, the largest in Greece, will turn the port into a most competitive and busy one in Europe and beyond, which in turn will benefit China-EU relations at large.

The Premier concluded his speech by calling on China and Greece, two ancient civilizations, to join hands with durable wisdom and openness of the sea so as to contribute to foster a modern oceanic civilization that is rooted in tradition and oriented toward the future.
