Mark Palios has resigned as chief executive of the English Football Association, becoming the first casualty from the sex scandal over England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson's affair with an FA secretary.

Palios, who was appointed to the post a year ago, felt mounting pressure following reports that he also had a brief fling with the secretary Faria Alam.

The final straw came when The News of the World tabloid reported on Sunday that FA officials attempted to protect him at the expense of Eriksson over their affairs with the same woman.

An FA official reportedly offered The News of the World the "chapter and verse" of Eriksson's private life in return for the paper keeping quiet on Palios.

Palios says, "Personally, I do not accept I have been guilty of any wrongdoing. But it has become clear to me that my action tonight is essential to enable the FA to begin to return to normality."
