About SIFF
2004-6-3 13:52:46
In 1980s, some film artists in Shanghai, who loved films and have devoted the whole lives to the development of Chinese films, proposed to hold the Shanghai International Film Festival. The Shanghai Municipal Government and Ministry of Radio, Film & TV co-applied the State Council for the festival in 1992, and got the approval in June in the same year.
First run in October 1993, the Shanghai International Film Festival was accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations as the only "A" category international film festival in China, which is a non-specialized competitive international film festival. The Shanghai International Film Festival is co-directed by the State Administration of Radio, Film & TV and the Shanghai Municipal Government. According to the FIAPF International Regulations, this annual Festival comprises four major activities, including "Jin Jue" Award International Film Competition, International Film Panorama, International Film & TV Market and "Jin Jue" International Film Forum. There are 8 awards winners to be presented by the international jury for the "Jin Jue" Award International Film Competition, the top honor of the festival. Shanghai Film Art Center, the main cinema of the festival, has welcomed international stars such as Oliver Stone, Nagisa Oshima, Alan Parker, Sophia Loren, Sophie Marceau, Tsui Hark etc., who were our guests and juries.
With a successful history of 6 editions, each festival has attracted hundreds of domestic and international films participating in competition and panorama. More Chinese films received grand prizes in recent years. With international guests stars' presentation, the Shanghai International Film Festival has become an important celebration for movie fans in Shanghai and the surrounding areas. Nowadays the nine-day movie event in June is one of important landscapes highlighting cultural life in Shanghai.
