UN Undersecretary-General Anwarul Chowdhury said at a conference in Shanghai that AIDS poses a serious challenge to the development in the Asian-Pacific region.
The latest UN statistics show that Asia has become the second largest region of AIDS outbreak after Africa.

Chowdhury notes in order to effectively contain the spread of AIDS, Asian-Pacific countries need to develop effective policies and launch programs to control the disease.

The Asia-Pacific representative of the World Health Organization says the WHO will help the Asian-Pacific region improve their public health systems and offer necessary technical and information support.
