More Chinese to Tune into Oscars

Chinese will be tuning in to the Oscars in record numbers this year, as more local TV stations have obtained the broadcasting rights to the global movie extravaganza.
China Central Television is the first channel to get broadcasting rights this year. It first relayed the Academy Awards to the world's most populous country last year.

No reports show whether CCTV will show the Oscars live, but if so, the network will be keeping its fingers crossed against any embarrassing incidents, such as when singer Janet Jackson's right breast was exposed to millions during the live airing of the U.S. Super Bowl football match earlier this month.

Shanghai East Movie Channel, China's first local movie channel, has also bought the relay rights for the ceremony.

In addition, Shanghai TV station can make Oscar-related programs and sell them to other TV stations in China.

The 76th Oscar Awards Ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. Beijing time on March 1.
