Protests US Limits on Chinese Textiles

China strongly protests against US limitation on Chinese textile imports, and reserves the right to take measures against the restrictions under the framework of the World Trade Organization. CRI's Yang Binyuan has more.
Since last month, the US Department of Commerce has been accepting applications targeting restrictions on the importation of about 300 types of Chinese-made combed cotton yarn.

The American Textiles Organization has decided to limit Chinese textiles imports because Chinese-made products allegedly disturb the U.S. market.

The move has triggered strong protest from the Chinese side.

Hu Min is spokeswoman from China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textiles.

She says these claims are unfair, and the restrictions are unreasonable.

"We think it's an unreasonable act that the American Textiles Organization adopts the so-called restrictions against the import of Chinese textiles. Undoubtedly, it violates WTO free trade rules. China opposes the act and appeals for the U.S. Government to overrule what we think an unreasonable application."

The U.S. government has placed restrictions on the importation of four kinds of Chinese-made textiles, including knitting cloths, bathrobes and socks.

In the past nine months, less than 3 per cent of combed cotton yarn exported to the U.S. has come from China.

Hu Min says it is impossible to disturb the American market.

"Only 3 per cent of the imports can not pose threats to U.S. market. In addition, the price of the products from China is higher than those from other developing countries, which will not harm the American market order."

The spokeswoman urges the U.S. government to carefully deal with such applications, stressing that restrictions on Chinese textile imports will bear a negative impact on Sino-US relations.

She says the Chinese Government reserves the right to take measures against the restrictions under the WTO framework.
