Chinese President Xi Jinping is calling on Asian countries to promote unity, cooperation, and the development of the continent.

Xi Jinping made the call at the ongoing fourth summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia.

Hailing Asia as an important driving force of the world economy, the President calls on countries in the region to jointly consolidate and safeguard the momentum of Asian development.

President Xi says China's decision to take over the CICA rotating presidency is the country's practical action to safeguard peace.

"Participating countries have attached great importance to the summit, which shows the urgency and importance of the security issues here in Asia, and also reflects that as a security forum which gathers the largest number of Asian countries, the CICA has a promising future in reaching Asian consensus, promoting dialogue among civilizations and strengthening mutual trust and interaction. I believe this year's summit will provide conducive proposals to Asian countries in facing with security threat and challenges, and make contributions to the peace, stability in Asia and the world."

Over 20 international leaders, including 11 heads of state, are attending the summit in Shanghai, which run through today.

CICA member states are expected to issue a Shanghai Declaration on commitments to strengthening strategic coordination.
