Several famous Chinese calligraphers and painters, including Meng Gaosheng, Wang Linshi and Liu Rusheng, have been confirmed to have been on board a missing Malaysian airlines flight, following their exhibition in Kuala Lumpur.

The exhibition was held by a 24-member Chinese painters' team on March 5. The 24 Chinese painters came from such cities as Beijing, Shanghai, Shandong, Jiangsu and Sichuan, the China Daily newspaper reported.

The Malaysia Airlines plane that went missing on Saturday morning with 239 people on board had crashed into waters off Vietnam's southern Phu Quoc Island.

153 Chinese adult passengers plus an infant are among the victims. The China Daily website quotes the official website of Malaysia Airlines in stating that a third of the Chinese passengers on board the plane are members of the post-80 generation, whilst 20 are aged above 65.
