Over 8000 people are choosing to live in cheap container-style apartments in Chengdu, the capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, Chengdu-based wccdaily.scol.com.cn reports.
Just like the "Ant Tribes" who reside together in shabby areas in major metropolises, these people also have a nickname of "Cabinet Tribe", which indicates that they live in small spaces resembling cabinets.
The container-style apartments cost about 6 yuan per day to rent, compared to ordinary separate rooms of the same size which can cost from 400 to 600 yuan a month in Chengdu, and the price is higher in downtown areas leading many construction workers, immigrant workers, and new graduates to choose these containers in order to lower their living costs.
However, due to safety concerns, such apartments don't provide electricity, water and gas. There's no separate toilet or bathroom, either.
And the door can also be kicked open easily.
However, such apartments became quite popular in Chengdu from 2012.
In addition to the tenants, Li Yao, who is in charge of the container company, said there are also some customers who want to buy these containers to build hotels.
"There are already such container-style hotels in other provinces. I also hope to own a piece of land one day to run a two or three-storey container hotel." Li added. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
