The East African Great Rift Valley, one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world, is bordered by escarpments containing a series of lakes. Lake Naivasha, located 90 miles from the northwest of Nairobi, Kenya, lies at the highest point in the Kenyan Rift valley at around 1900 meters above sea level. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Lake Naivasha is the only freshwater lake in Kenya and is home to a wide variety of wildlife including over 400 different species of birds and a sizeable population of hippos, attracting thousands of visitors each year.
The name of the lake derives from the local Maasai name Nai'posha, meaning "rough water" because of potential floods during storms.
