China and Switzerland formally established diplomatic ties in the year 1950. Since then, bilateral ties have witnessed constant breakthroughs, or as Swiss Ambassador to China, Jean-Jacques de Dardel, put it, "many one of the first or firsts". Indeed, Switzerland was not only the first major Western country to establish diplomatic ties with China, but also the first country to set up joint-venture companies with China after the launch of its reform and opening-up policy. Today China-Switzerland partnerships have spread across all sectors: most notably, in the manufacturing, pharmaceutical and financial service sectors.
So how do we assess the new dynamism of China-Switzerland ties today? What can both sides bring to the table to foster greater innovations in Chinese industry?
