The Monkey King Returns - Older and Wiser?

Liu Xiao Ling Tong was just 26 when he played the part of the Monkey King in the iconic 1986 TV adaptation of the classic novel 'Journey to the West'. The series, telling the epic tale of  the Tang Dynasty Buddhist monk Xuanzang and his pilgrimate to find the sacred texts, in the company of three disciples, a pig demon, a river demon and Sun Wukong the Monkey King.

Now 55, Liu Xiao Ling Tong is now working with the Paramount Pictures to shoot a cinematic version of the classic, bringing the epic tale to new audiences.

Speaking to China Plus, he reveals how he created the role of the mischievous and cunning monkey; the other parts he's played in a long career, and why he thinks the Journey to the West is such a powerful tale.
